MAASTRICHT, The Netherlands, – Duct tape warts has been verified as too ineffective to treat  warts with the scientific name,verruca vulgaris, researchers here reported.

Action Objectives:

1. To let the parents of school children with warts know about the proven ineffectiveness of duct tape as wart remover in an earlier review of at least 50 wart removal attempts but only for salicylic acid treatment..

2.  To allow them to assess the findings for themselves as this study may not have precise findings to confirm the absence of curative effect for eliminating warts.

In “Archives of Pedratic and Adolescent Medicine” issued in November,Dr. Marcus Spigt of Maastricht University mentioned that six weeks after the wart removal trial, only 16% of school children troubled  with having warts experienced the positive effect while the rest did not.

Notably, the result of the  trial which was joined by a 103 randomly selected children had a great difference from the one conducted earlier which was on cryotherapy against the therapy utilizing duct tape. Even though the study claimed that 85% of the participants got rid of their warts, some were still skeptical and had negative assertions . According to Dr. Spigt, the study had methodological flaws which made the results somehow questionable.

A comparative study/experiment was conducted aimed at evaluating effects of two intervention tools. Children who underwent the experimental process of treatment  were divided into two.  51 of them composed the duct tape group all of whom were asked to wear the duct tape for seven straight days  while the 52 members of the  placebo group were asked to wear another kind of tape. Both groups, however had their warts soaked after removing the duct tape.

The study also showed significant findings.  One of which was on the change in size six weeks after the treatment. In the duct tape warts  group, the warts were noted to have decreased from the average of 4.6mm to 3.4 mm or 27%.  The placebo group on the other hand, had  a comparatively lesser percentage in size reduction. From 4.4 mm, it went down to 4.0 which was only 9% of the group.  Likewise, the  warts disappeared in almost 16% of the children belonging to the duct tape group while only 6% in the placebo group did. Even so, this noted difference was not acceptable to the researchers as something significant.

The other notable findings in the study prove the argument on duct tape’s efficacy. For one thing, it showed a significant difference in the length of occurrence of the warts in the children under treatment. The  warts lived longer in the duct tape group with an average of 38.5 weeks than in the placebo group with only 34.2 weeks. The researchers further reported that the warts that surround the ones treated disappeared in only 21% of children  in the duct tape group while 27% in the placebo group. Moreover, 15% of the children in the duct tape group complained about bad effects  such as eczema and erythema all of which were not  experienced by the placebo group  although both mentioned about the uncomfortable   and painful use of the pumice stone in the treatment process.

As a whole, Dr Spigt’s team viewed the use of duct tape  as inconvenient and ineffective for curing common warts, plantar warts, genital warts, flat warts, etc..  Both the duct tape and placebo cannot be considered as effective interventions.  The researchers further asserted that even though the use of placebo had a  30% effect within 10 days of treatment, it may have  been due to the fact that 47% in the duct tape group and 62% in the placebo group already had other wart treatments before-one thing that makes the findings imprecise.

Hence, the researchers then recommended the use of a much sticky duct tape for a longer period yet discouraged the use of the pumice stone for it only triggers the growth and spread of the warts.

Having reviewed the results of the study, the panel came up with a number of important observations regarding the some loop holes or  inconsistency in  the hypotheses made.

The authors claimed that the study only  tests an economical alternative for war treatment for a common condition.  Nevertheless, they explained that the reason why they  questioned the investigators’ findings saying the effects of duct tape warts were NOT significant was because of some methodological limitations.  Thus, additional studies and trials addressing the same limitations should be made before drawing such kind of conclusion.

WASHINGTON – On Monday, Dutch researchers claimed that duct tape warts which was believed to be an easy and affordable way to cure warts in school children actually does not work any better than placebo.

A study which consisted of 103 children with ages ranging from 4 to 12 revealed that duct tape just works the almost the same as the placebo. The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine reported that based on the results of the study, only 16% percent in the duct tape group and 6 % in the placebo group got rid of their common warts, plantar warts, genital warts, etc. This noted 10% difference was not considered significant by the researchers.

In six long weeks of treatment, some children belonging to the duct tape group experienced some of the side effects like having skin rashes, severe itching and feeling of discomfort in wearing the tape. However, such adverse effects were not reported in the case of the placebo group.

There are many alternative ways on how to eliminate warts. One of which is the process/procedure known as cryotherapy. This requires freezing of the warts few times each day within a long period of time until they reduce in size and eventually disappear. Another unpleasant way is the use of the salicylic acid, a type of chemical which is intended to burn off the warts. This should be done regularly and should be used in strong formulation. But if one finds inconvenience in the use of the two abovementioned alternatives , he may just do nothing and let the warts disappear on its own. However, this may take a very long process.

On the other hand, Dr. Haen’s team recommended the use of the tape since it is considered helpful yet economical. Even Dr. Dean Focht of Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma and his team claimed that the use of such tape was comparatively better than cryotherapy and application of salicylic acid. As a result, it has become as a popular way of curing warts.

However, many found Dr. Focht’s team as unconvincing. The Dutch researchers, in particular argued that the team did not personally interview the children who underwent the treatment process about the disappearance of the warts. The fact that they did not see the actual result lessened the credibility of the findings one way or the other.

Hearsay evidence and misconception leads many to believe that duct tape can cure common warts. Simply covering warts with duct tapes has no exceptional contribution to its cure.

After conducting the so-called first double-blind controlled trial, judging the capability of the popular duct tape in curing common warts, genital warts, plantar wart and others  researchers has come up to their conclusion.

Rachel Wenner, M.D., of the University of Minnesota claimed that the study was conducted through 90 adult volunteers with at least one wart measuring 2mm to 15mm. Without identifiable pattern, they have been given pads consisting of moleskin with transparent duct tape or moleskin alone.

They have been ordered to wear their given pads for seven days and leave them off on the seventh evening which was repeated for two months or until the wart is cured. The outcome of these two treatments shows no significant differences at the end of two months.

The study shows that regardless of the cure given, the mean diameter and height of the warts decreased. Among 80 volunteers who had finished the study, eight out of 39 in the treatment group had complete resolution while nine had out of the 41 in the control arm.

Dr. Wenner and her colleagues found out that the only significant factor associated with the complete resolution is the duration of warts which means the newer warts resolve immediately the older ones due to lesion it created.

Salicylic Acid – Cream or gel intended to burn the skin, causing scarring and takes 4 months. This method causes harsh skin irritation and should not be used on the face at all.

Duct Tape Warts Removal -Placing tape over the wart, then filing it down, then soaking it and covering it back up again with tape. This technique causes severe skin exasperation. Duct tape should not be used on the face.

Cryotherapy

A very cold liquid, probably nitrogen, is sprayed on to the wart, freezing it and destroy the cells. A blister develops, which in due course turns into a shell and falls off a week or so later. A doctor needs to do this and you may need anesthesia. You may need several application if the wart is large, which will be costly. Not at all use the over-the-counter version on the face.

Surgery

Expensive . Operation is less commonly used for warts. Also, when surgery is used as a curing for warts, the warts frequently come back. There is a high threat of scarring. Also, if the wart is huge, your doctor will have to cut it out and then you have to get stitches.

Laser Treatment

Very expensive procedure. Scarring effect. Laser surgery is often optional for bolshie warts.
